why strive

Beautiful the woven structure
of millet stalk's green face
similar to corn and yet
with slender elegant trace

Hidden behind the blackberry briar
stretched high to reach the sun
quietly gracious, patient, kind,
steadfast when day is done

Half inch inchworm lands on my leg
I lift him with my pencil
with suctioned end he propels in air
to search for surface to stencil

I stretch him toward the blackberry leaf
and he happily jumps and climbs on
and starts the chomping pattern in
the glory of the sun

I tender pull up millet plant
and dig a hole near feet
and place him in an open spot
for the gleaners who come to eat
